Wahoo, a member of the mackerel and tuna family, are found throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. This fast-growing predatory fish lives only a few years and can reach a length of eight feet (2.4 meters) and weigh almost 200 pounds.

Commercial Sources

Wahoo are caught in Hawaii and the southeastern U.S. (Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico). Import statistics are not available for this species.

Capture Methods

Wahoo are caught primarily using hook-and-line gear and as incidental bycatch in longline fisheries.

Wahoo grow and reproduce quickly, two traits that help them withstand fishing pressure. However, little research has been done on the health of wahoo populations, so their stock status is generally unknown.

Most wahoos are caught by hook-and-line or longlines. The latter can result in significant bycatch of threatened sea turtles.
